An Expositional Commentary
Written in a comprehensive style, this work is a detailed, expositional commentary of Jonah—God’s grace and the salvation of Nineveh—as well as Nahum—the vivid destruction and judgment of Nineveh. This work is a verse-by-verse explanation of each prophetic book according to the New American Standard Bible (NASB). In the book of Jonah, the Ninevites of Assyria were spared from destruction because they repented of their cruel and annihilatory exploits. However, less than a century later, the Assyrians apparently rescinded their repentance and demolished the ten northern tribes of Israel in 722 BC. As a result of the divided kingdom, nineteen evil kings had reigned over Israel since its inception in 931 BC, but the entire nation of Israel was still the Lord’s sovereign elect. God will not tolerate the mistreatment and oppression of His people in keeping with His promises concerning the Abrahamic covenant.
Hence, Nahum’s message signifies the complete and absolute obliteration of the Assyrian Empire and its
capital city of Nineveh.
